Rooted in Resilience

I very much hope you had a good August. We had a lovely little getaway to Dieppe, Normandy, for a few days catching up with family and then visiting the interesting coastal towns of Brighton, Hastings and Rye. It did feel like a grounded and restful holiday. The weather was no longer as hot as previous weeks and we could feel glimpses of autumn coming.
Soon after our return home, we were lucky to go and see a concert by Rising Appalachia and this song, Resilient, really inspired me towards this theme in September.
When I hear the word resilience, I often think of the Earth herself. Despite fires, floods, storms, and human strain, she regenerates, grows again, and continues to sustain life for all of us.
I asked myself: what does resilience look like in my own life, my body, and my community?
Resilience isn’t just about constructing a protective barrier against breaking. It’s much more about bending, softening, and finding our way back to centre when life asks more of us than we thought we could give. Like the mycelium beneath our feet, resilience thrives in connection — with ourselves, with the Earth, and with one another.
As we shift from the fullness of summer into the slowing pace of autumn, nature reminds us that resilience is seasonal, too. The Earth prepares by storing energy, dropping leaves, and conserving resources. It is the time to ground, nourish, and simplify — practices that help us strengthen our inner roots as the outer world begins to cool and contract.
When life feels heavy, it’s easy to wonder: What can I possibly do? The answer isn’t to do everything, but to do what is yours to give. Each of us has a role — whether that’s nourishment through food, offering a listening ear to someone who may need it, tending the garden, or simply choosing presence in the moment. Together, these small acts create a strong web of support. You may find some inspiration in Dr. Ayana Elizabeth Johnson’s “Climate Venn Diagram” which beautifully illustrates this: Resilience blooms when we find the intersection of what we love, what we are good at, what the world needs, and what supports us. It’s not about doing everything — it’s about doing what you can, wholeheartedly, and trusting others to do the same.
Resilience is not just survival; it’s the courage to keep showing up, to grow through adversity, to rise with joy and determination.
Seasonal Tools for Everyday Resilience
Ground through food: Favour warm, cooked meals with root vegetables, grains, and spices like ginger or cinnamon. I love curling up with a nice cup of Golden Milk!
Anchor in the body: Gentle movement, yoga, a slow walk outdoors helps us adapt to seasonal shifts or 5 minutes in silence or meditation.
Breathe: Take 3 deep breaths or triangle breaths (breathe in for 3, hold for 3, breathe out for 3) when you feel scattered — it resets the nervous system instantly.
Connect: Share a meal, catch up with a friend or take part in simple ritual with someone you love. Community is resilience. I am reconnecting with my Reiki practice and want to offer it to my friends and family.
Simplify: Choose one small, nourishing act today — hydrate, rest early, or step outside at sunset. Going to bed before 11pm is my challenge this month!
So I ask you:
What are your gifts?
How do you restore yourself when the world feels heavy?
Where can you lean into community, connection, and trust?
Affirmation for the Season:
“I am rooted, I am resilient, and I rise with the rhythms of the Earth.”

The Fermentation Club at Bacareto : Autumn
We had such a lovely time at the launch of our Fermentation Club on the 16th of July. Our guest speaker, Force of Nature Chef, Alex McAllister-Lunt, who brought many fermented sodas and snack surprises to try; it was truly mind-blowing. We are now continuing with our Autumn session, focused on Cultured Vegetables: Kraut, Kimchi, and Kvass with our special guest, author and microbiologist, Caroline Gilmartin. It will be another exciting session to expand your knowledge in fermentation on Wednesday, the 1st of October, from 6:45–9:30 PM.
Half of the available tickets have already been taken (as I write), so don't wait too long if you want to join in! Keep an eye on our calendar and Instagram posts for ticket information! The evening will be a delicious blend of tasting, sharing, and learning in a relaxed, community-centred atmosphere.
To elevate the experience, you’ll have the option to enjoy a plate of special seasonal Cichetti (Venetian tapas) from Bacareto. Come curious, leave inspired!

Water Kefir Flavour of the Month
I always love a dark yellow Water Kefir with Turmeric during the late summer season, possibly with some autumn fruits like pears or apples. It is still a work in progress but I'm aiming for a Golden Kefir!!
Do your bit for the environment and remember to return your empty bottles and sauerkraut jars—reusing is much better than recycling!
