Where Energy Flows
Late summer is vibrant but this year has been particularly marked by heatwaves and fires - yet it offers its own remedies. Hedgerows are laden with blackberries, the light softens, and there's a sense of ripening and change. Nature beautifully illustrates that energy is dynamic, with everything in relationship and response.
I have been reflecting on energy - a theme that I highlighted back in October 2023: its nature, how we manage it, and what aids its harmonious flow. Listening to The Energy Codes by Dr Sue Morter, and practicing Qi Gong (outdoors, with Emma from the Sunhouse), has deepened this reflection.
The core truth is that energy is intertwined with our breathing, movement, digestion, emotions, and connections.
Breath, movement, music, digestion, and healing, all embody energy. Conscious breathing creates space, and mindful movement - whether walking, stretching, or dancing - helps circulate energy, reducing tension and stress. Movement is vital for wellbeing, supporting the life-force, the lymphatic flow, the nervous system's regulation, digestion, and self-reconnection. Even a few conscious breaths and ten minutes of movement can transform a day. Sue Morter offers various techniques to help us realign with each chakra level.
There's a strong link between breath, energy, gut health, and fermentation. Stress affects digestion, impacting the absorption of nourishment and therefore our overall sense of well-being. Supporting gut health goes beyond the physical; it affects us emotionally and energetically. Fermented foods and drinks play a crucial role, supporting our inner ecosystem and teaching us about natural transformation.
Many are experiencing a potent inner season of release, manifestation, and awakening. Whether influenced by cosmic rhythms, the season, or intuition, it's a time to return to essentials: breath, body, land, and love.
Wisdom lies in simplicity:
Grounding by placing your feet on the earth.
Taking fuller breaths.
Choosing living, alkaline foods.
Moving energy rather than holding it in.
Trusting in both spiritual and physical nourishment.
This season, I have been picking a lot of blackberries, and they feel like the perfect late summer offering - wild, abundant, deeply coloured, rich in antioxidants, fibre and flavour. They carry that beautiful balance of sweetness and sharpness, reminding us that nourishment can be vibrant, simple and close to home.
One of my favourite ways to use them at the moment is in a raw blackberry chia jam. It is quick to make, delicious, and a lovely way to celebrate the season while adding extra fibre and plant nourishment to the diet.
Raw blackberry chia jam
You will need
2 cups fresh blackberries
1-2 tablespoons chia seeds
1-2 teaspoons raw honey or maple syrup, if needed
A squeeze of fresh lemon juice
Optional: a little cinnamon or vanilla
Method
Mash the blackberries gently with a fork, keeping a little texture, you can also gently stew them with other berries like elderberries. Once cooled down stir in the chia seeds, lemon juice, and natural sweetener if using. Leave for 15-20 minutes so the chia can absorb the juices and thicken into a jammy consistency. Spoon into a clean jar and keep in the fridge. This is beautiful on natural or kefir yoghurt, porridge, toast, chia pudding, or simply enjoyed by the spoonful and so good for your gut!
As we move through the richness of late summer, I feel increasingly called to support people in these deeper connections - between body and energy, gut and emotions, breath and presence, nourishment and awakening. So much healing begins when we come back into relationship with ourselves and with the living world around us.
The body is always listening.
The breath is always available.
The earth is always holding us.
And energy, when tended gently, can become a beautiful guide back to wholeness.
Mantras for this season:
I breathe deeply, move gently, and allow life to flow through me.
I nourish my body, ground my energy, and open my heart to love.
